OUR STORY & PHILOSOPHY
fluo is a design label specialized in the creation of products used in interior design, fashion and everyday life.
The label was founded in 2001 by Ilke Penzlien and Sandra Thomsen during their studies at the
University of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Germany.
Since 2011 Sandra is running the label on her own next to her Design Studio www.sandrathomsen.com
while Ilke is working in the field of interior design www.ilkepenzlien.de in Berlin.
The first design of the duo was the fluo bag, a disposable plastic bag recast in soft calf leather with standard proportions, right down to the punched out crescent handle and bottom placket.
By transferring the shape of a common shopping bag into soft and snug calf leather they created a simple and long lasting bag which became the labels "classic" product.
The bag was shown at various exhibitions, both at the design store of MoMA in New York and at the gallery
of artist Katsuhito Nishikawa in Tokyo.
fluo creates products through multiple disciplines from furniture to textiles and various accessories.
Sandra Thomsen's design approach is evident in her keen sense of colors, textures and restrained formal language.
Her sense of aesthetics is characterised by the use of simple forms, the sensitive handling of materials
and a sure sense of proportion.
An important aspect is the approach of making useful things precise. Using mostly natural high quality materials, fluo creates functional long lasting products in a pure, elegant and simple way.
